The back braces are each made up of four main laminations; a face, two core and a back lamination. A fifth smaller lamination is added to the bottom rear of each back brace to add strength and to add thickness from front to back. The two core laminations are deliberately cut from quarter-sawn Ash, which has a high tensile strength and is very strong and stable with excellent flexion; perfect for a back brace. The laminations are glued into their final shape on a special form, curved to match the natural shape of the lower back. Each back brace is designed to flex as you sit and rock in the chair, and they are also designed to partially rotate in the chair seat mortices so that they ‘roll’ with the sitter if you reach to the left or right – as in reaching for your favourite tipple! Finally, to stop any ‘squeaking’ during the life of the chair, the top and bottom tenons that fit into the seat and headrest are soaked in melted paraffin wax to act as a lubricant.
Forget all the squashy sofas that look inviting but are disastrous for our backs. The ergonomics of this chair mean you will want to sit in it for hours at a time.
